I joined Unity in November 2021 as the very first Housing Support Officer. After two years, I
was promoted to Senior Housing Support Officer, and by my third year I had become the
Line Manager. My journey here has been one of growth, challenges, and profound learning.
There’s no such thing as a “typical” day in my role, each one swings from one extreme to
another. What makes it all worthwhile is seeing someone grow, starting from nothing, and
achieving something.
One story in particular sticks with me: a man came to us homeless, unsupported, a victim of
racist crime, even stabbed, and completely withdrawn, won’t make eye contact. It was my
first meeting with him. We slowly built a bond. I showed him how to clean, cook, budget, buy
in bulk, and shop sensibly. Taught him life skills and shared them step by step. Even though
he’s moved on, he’s still in touch. We helped him start an online clothing business, and
offered long-term housing to show loyalty and support.
Another example: a young man with a football injury ended up homeless when club funding
discontinued. We arranged physiotherapy, connected via my niece, who is a coach – she
ended up coaching him and now he’s been scouted into a football apprenticeship. I still ring
him every six months.
Describing the team in three words? Dedicated, hardworking, loyal.
What I love most about working here is loyalty, especially loyalty to my boss. He’s amazing.
I use my background in psychology here, too: I hype people up, show them what they’re
doing well, then gently guide them on what could improve. Empathy, powerful morals, strong
standards—if you don’t have those, this job isn’t for you.
Every case is totally different. Some days are heavy, aggression, fear, barriers, but we don’t
let it stop us. We check in weekly, with “high risk” clients every two days.
We support in many ways: food banks, council hubs (like Brent Hub offering small crisis
loans), counselling, dental care. If someone looks rundown, we're there to take them to
hospital, make sure they're seen.
We don't do everything for people, the goal is independence. Teach them, empower them.
Give them a calendar if their phone can’t keep them organised. Help them understand, and
know they can call me for advice.
I’m most proud when someone from nothing starts believing in themselves, plants a seed
and watches it grow, like a young person with an injury returning to football, or someone
previously homeless learning basic life skills and taking control of their future.
Advice for anyone thinking of joining this team: you must have empathy, honesty, and
integrity. Don’t lie. Don’t promise things you can’t deliver. If we can’t directly help, we find
someone who can.
Also, don’t run before you’re steady. Walk first. Learn. Grow.
Working at Unity has changed me. I’ve learnt as much from the people I support as I’ve been
able to give. The atmosphere here is supportive and real, strict but loving. Everyone laughs,
connects. We work hard, because we care deeply.
I wish more people saw that: this isn’t just a job. It’s a responsibility. And if you’ve got a solid
mindset and big heart, there’s nothing more rewarding than helping others build their lives
again.
What makes Unity different from other places I’ve worked is the genuinely friendly and supportive atmosphere. People look out for each other here, and that creates a workplace where you feel valued.

I work as an Admin Receptionist. I joined Unity Housing in March 2024, and from the very beginning I felt that this was a welcoming and positive place to work.
What first attracted me to Unity was the chance to be part of an organisation that makes a real difference to people’s lives, especially those who are vulnerable or experiencing homelessness. I wanted a role where I could help people in a meaningful way, and Unity offered exactly that.
My experience so far has been very positive. I’ve settled in quickly, and every day brings something new to learn. The job has opened my eyes to the different challenges people face, and it’s rewarding to be able to play even a small part in supporting them.
The thing I enjoy most about my role is signing up homeless individuals and helping them take their first steps towards stable housing. Knowing that you’re contributing to someone’s safety and well-being is incredibly fulfilling.
The team culture in the London office is friendly, happy, and easy-going. Everyone gets on well, and it’s genuinely nice to be around the people I work with. There’s a strong sense of teamwork, and you always feel included.
Since joining, I’ve had the chance to learn from people with many different backgrounds, which has helped me understand a wide range of perspectives. This job exposes you to experiences and stories you wouldn’t come across elsewhere, and that’s helped me grow personally and professionally.
One thing that pleasantly surprised me was just how many properties Unity manages, and how well organised everything is. The scale of the operation, and the quality of the management, really stood out.
Unity helps me do my job well by providing support whenever I need it. Owian is always there to help, and if I’m unsure about anything, I know I can go to him for guidance. That kind of support makes a huge difference when you’re learning a new environment.
What makes Unity different from other places I’ve worked is the genuinely friendly and supportive atmosphere. People look out for each other here, and that creates a workplace where you feel valued.
For anyone considering joining Unity Housing, I would say that you need to be supportive, patient, and reassuring, because the work you do has a real impact on people’s lives. If you care about helping others and want to grow in a meaningful role, Unity is a great place to be.

I’ve been with Unity Housing for two and a half years, although my relationship with the
organisation goes back much further. I first worked with Unity Housing in 2006 in an
administrative role, and after leaving for a while, I chose to return because of the positive
experience I had previously.
Since rejoining, my experience working here has been very comfortable and supportive. The
office environment is friendly, and everyone is always ready to help one another. Because
our team works closely with the back office in India, we act as the link between them and our
tenants. This means communication is crucial, and Unity Housing has created a smooth,
collaborative way of working that really benefits both staff and residents.
What I enjoy most about my role is being able to listen to tenants’ concerns and help resolve
their issues. When you’re able to support someone and make their day a little easier, it gives
you a real sense of satisfaction.
The atmosphere at Unity Housing is genuinely inclusive. We celebrate different cultures and
traditions together, whether it’s Christmas, Diwali, or any other occasion. Everyone gets
involved, and there’s a strong sense of unity with no barriers or differences between us.
Since joining, I’ve learned a great deal about the different aspects of property management
and how it connects with the unique needs of social housing. Unity Housing provides training
and support that you don’t necessarily get in traditional property agencies, especially when
working with people who have diverse backgrounds and challenges.
One thing that truly surprised me was the transformation and growth of the organisation. The
way Unity Housing has expanded from property management into social housing, and
grown so quickly across the UK, is really impressive.
Unity Housing enables me to do my job effectively by offering the right tools, support, and
teamwork to ensure things run smoothly. When you know the organisation has your back, it
makes it much easier to provide the best service for tenants.
What makes Unity Housing stand out from other organisations I’ve worked for is its
specialisation in social housing. Many agencies focus solely on standard property
management, but Unity Housing’s dedication to supporting communities and providing safe,
stable homes is what makes it different.
For anyone considering joining Unity Housing, I would say there is so much to learn,
especially if you really immerse yourself in this sector. You gain a deep understanding of
different communities and the challenges people face. It really opens your eyes and gives
you a greater sense of purpose in the work you do.

I recently joined Unity Housing as part of the Maintenance Team. I started just a week ago,
but from the moment I arrived, I could see that the company is professional, well-organised,
and genuinely welcoming.
During my first week, I have been shadowing the Maintenance Manager to get a clear
understanding of what to expect in the role and the kinds of challenges I’ll be dealing with.
It’s been a really helpful introduction and has given me a good sense of the day-to-day work.
The biggest surprise so far has been the friendly atmosphere. Everyone has been
approachable, positive, and willing to help, which makes settling in a lot easier.
The onboarding and training process has been smooth and informative. I’ve been shown
different procedures, learned how things operate, and have been given plenty of
opportunities to ask questions and take things in at my own pace.
The team I’ve joined is very professional and experienced, and they’ve made me feel part of
the group straight away. The communication is strong, and the guidance I’ve received from
both my manager and colleagues has been clear, supportive and well-paced. I feel confident
that if I’m unsure about anything, someone is always nearby to point me in the right
direction.
I’ve enjoyed the variety in the job already, every day brings different tasks and challenges,
which keeps things interesting. I’m excited to learn new skills, understand the organisation’s
way of working, and make the most of the training opportunities available.
Even though it’s only been a week, I already feel supported, welcomed, and motivated. I’m
looking forward to growing within the role and contributing to the positive work Unity Housing
is known for.
