Age: 31 years old
Came to Unity Housing Support: January 2025 - Left July 2025
Mr G approached Unity Housing Support following a referral from Newham Council. At the time, he was living in hotel accommodation provided for refugees and was at risk of eviction before coming to us.

As he had recently arrived from abroad and did not speak much English, he found it very difficult to communicate with staff, myself, and other services he was engaging with. From the beginning, I consistently encouraged him to speak English as much as possible and supported him to enrol in an English language class. He joined the course and however he was still struggling.

Although he had strong aspirations for his future, the language barrier and the challenges of settling into a new country left him feeling demotivated and impacted his confidence. At one stage, he began to withdraw and struggled to move forward. I continued to encourage and motivate him, and gradually he started enrolling in short-term courses to rebuild his confidence.

To further support his development, I encouraged him to apply for part-time work to improve his speaking and interpersonal skills and to help regain his motivation. Despite applying for several roles without success, he became discouraged again. I then had a detailed discussion with him and suggested exploring the option of pursuing a master’s degree, as he already held an engineering degree. Initially, he felt he lacked the confidence to do so, but with ongoing encouragement, he began to consider the idea seriously.

Eventually, he decided he was ready to apply. We explored available courses together, which were limited, and identified a suitable programme at the University of Edinburgh. I supported him throughout the application process, including preparation for the assessment. He successfully passed the assessment and secured a place on the course.

He has since moved to Edinburgh and is currently continuing his studies. This was a proud achievement for him , as he overcame significant language and confidence barriers and took a major step forward in building his future.
